Karna-Taal: A Weekend
Getaway
The Pre monsoon showers in Delhi had come earlier than
expected. Waking up on a Saturday morning to cool breeze blowing through my
hair and light drizzling rain, sitting at home was the last option for me.
After a stressful week, all you need is a short break, not
quite far away but secluded from the loud, blaring sounds of the city to relax,
and the Karna Lake and Resort of Haryana Tourism did the trick for me.
Located at 125kms from Delhi, Karna Lake or Karnal Lake is a
major tourist attraction of Haryana. It is situated in Karnal which is one of
the oldest districts of Haryana. It is believed that the city was founded by
Raja Karna, eldest son of Kunti, who played a major role in the war of
Mahabharata.
The Karna Lake also has its own share of historic
importance. Folklore has it that Karna used to bathe in this lake. It was at
this spot that he gave away his protective armour to Lord Indra, godfather of
Arjuna, Karna’s arch enemy.
Centuries later, the lake is beautifully landscaped with
tourist facilities designed along the water front. Apart from the resort, there
is a multi-cuisine restaurant, bar and gift shop for the visitors. The lake
also fascinates one and all with its boating attraction. Surrounding the resort
are well kept gardens with beautiful blooming flowers. You can often spot
families there merrily chatting or clicking pictures of the view. Also every 30
minutes, Luxury buses keep pouring in for a break at the restaurant.
If you plan on staying overnight, rooms, suites and cottages
are available.
Rooms are spacious, well furnished, equipped with a 32 inch
Led TV and split air conditioners. The beds are well made with clean linen. The
rooms also come with attached spacious bathrooms & dressing rooms.
If you are a group of 8-10 people, you might consider taking
the cottages instead which, I must say, are best in class. The cottages face
the lake and are tastefully designed with two spacious bedrooms, adjoining
bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a terrace. The roof to floor glass
windows in each bedroom provides an excellent view of the lake. At night the
small lights upon the lake with light wind can be a very pleasant site.
The Karnal city is only about 5kms away. So quick shopping
trips for the ladies is also an option.
On your way back you will be greeted by various local
dhabas. Each offering delicacies of Haryana but the one must stop is the
Jhilmil Dhaba. Hardly 10 minutes away from the resort, the dhaba has been
popular for the past 25 years for its quality food. You find travellers gorging
on their parathas and pakodas.
In a budget of Rs. 5000-10,000 you can have a perfect
getaway for the weekend.
Be it a couple, a family or a large group of friends, people
from all walks of life can come and enjoy the beauty of the resort.
Nice post :) Situated in Karnal, Karnal lake is a famous picnic spot for locals as well as tourists alike. Karnal town is believed to be founded by the Kauravas in the great Indian epic The Mahabharata and for travellers, there are plenty of hotels in Karnal.
